This is a snapshot of four stories that are currently ranked at the top on Google Blog Search as of now (October 6, 2008).

In case the fonts in the above screenshot appear small, let me give a quick summary – the stories are about Nokia’s new touch-screen phone, Steve Jobs’ heart attack, Sony’s new e-book reader and some commercial tool for converting video to audio.

Now compare the time when the same stories hit Techmeme home page.

The Google Blog says that this new home page of Google BlogSearch lets you "browse and discover the most interesting stories in the blogosphere". That may be the ultimate goal but frankly, the product is nowhere close yet.

Another point: Google BlogSearch doesn’t offer RSS feeds and the site is written in some complex JavaScript so you no option but to visit the page manually.

Hindi Song | Mutiny Blog Now Published as a Print Magazine

Jacob Joseph launched Mutiny as a personal blog some five years ago but it soon acquired the shape of a community blog with dozens of contributors (they call themselves mutineers) who all have day-jobs but still contribute religiously to Mutiny.

Now what this team has done is even more interesting – they have launched a print magazine based on their blog. This is probably the first blog that is available for reading both inside news-readers and on news-stands.

The motivation for launching a blog as a print magazine was simple – they want to reach more people as only a minuscule minority is reading blogs online at least in India.

My initial reaction to Mutiny’s blog magazine is exactly the same as Amit Varma - "It takes gumption and commitment to take a bold step like that, and I wish them all the best."

The first issue is available online as well.

Even if you're paying top dollar for high-speed Internet service, you may not be getting the performance you expect. Follow our guide to boost your broadband speed.

If you're serious about the Internet, chances are you spend anywhere from $30 to $99 per month for a broadband Internet connection. But regardless of how much you pay, are you getting all the speed that your Internet service provider promised you? And does your connection persist reliably without dropping out frequently or requiring modem reboots? With our quick guide, you can squeeze every last kilobit-per-second (kbps) of throughput out of your broadband modem and keep your connection running smoothly.

1. Test Your Connection Speed
Before you start tweaking, get a baseline reading of your downstream and upstream connection speeds at Speedtest.net. If possible, measure the speeds at different times of day, especially during the hours when you use the connection most frequently and at least once after midnight or 1:00 a.m. (when competition for bandwith is likely to be at its lowest level).

2. Update Your Firmware or Get a New Modem
If your cable or DSL modem is more than a couple of years old, ask your ISP for a new one. The exchange will probably be free; if there is a fee, you can usually waive it by agreeing to a new one-year contract. The latest cable modems meet the DOCSIS 2.0 (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) standard. If you have a 1.1 modem and a high-throughput plan, you'll likely experience a large speed increase just by swapping modems.

Even with a brand-new modem, make sure that you have the latest firmware installed. I upgraded my two-year-old Efficient Networks 5100b DSL modem from firmware version 1.0.0.39 to 1.0.0.53 and immediately saw my Speedtest throughput increase from 5.3 mbps to 5.9 mbps, just a hair below the 6 mbps that I'm paying for. Cable providers such as Comcast usually push new firmware to modems, so there's no need for most cable modem users to perform upgrades themselves.

To update your DSL modem, you'll have to connect to its Web interface, which means that you'll need to know the IP address of the modem on your local network. This information should be in your user manual; alternatively, you can find default settings for most modems on the Internet. The address will probably look something like 192.168.100.1 or 192.168.0.1. Enter this character string into your browser and the Web interface should come up. You'll likely have to sign in, using either a security code printed on the bottom of the modem or a default username and password (unless you previously changed it). Write down the login information for future reference.

Once you've logged in, check the firmware number on the status page and see whether a newer version of the firmware is available on the manufacturer's site. If it is, download this more recent firmware to your PC and then find and run the firmware update procedure from the modem's browser utility. Reboot, rerun Speedtest and see whether your data is traveling faster. Besides boosting transfer speeds, using a new modem or updated firmware can solve a host of nagging connection issues, such as intermittent dropouts.

3. Check Your Modem Parameters
While you're updating the firmware, check some key parameters. First, the maximum allowed speeds (both downstream and up) should match your service plan. If they don't, your ISP didn't set your service up properly. Give your ISP a call and ask it to fix the setup remotely.

Second, look for signal-to-noise ratio (or SN margin) and line attenuation, both measured in decibels (dB). The lower the signal-to-noise ratio, the more interference you have and the greater the number of packets that will need to be re-sent because they didn't come through the first time. For this reason, a noisy line can dramatically cut throughput. Line attenuation measures the drop in voltage that comes with splitting the signal (especially for cable modems) and with long runs of cable or older wiring. Excessive signal loss will cause a drop in throughput.

For DSL modems, anything above about 50 dB for line attenuation is poor and 20 to 30 dB is excellent. For signal-to-noise ratio, 7 to 10 dB is marginal and 20 to 28 dB is excellent. My modem's SN margin registered at 12.5 dB, barely reaching the good range, and its line attenuation reading was 30.5 dB, which rates as very good. Note that acceptable ranges may vary depending on your service level and modem type (faster connections need to be cleaner), so check with your cable or DSL provider to see what numbers you should look for.

4. Troubleshooting Line Quality
If your off-peak Speedtest numbers didn't measure up to your plan's specifications and if you found poor signal-to-noise or line attenuation numbers, it's time to troubleshoot your wiring. Excessive noise may cause intermittent dropouts, too.

Your first task is to determine whether the signal is already degraded when it reaches your house or whether your own wiring is at fault. To test this, move your cable modem as close as you can to where the wire first splits. If possible, take a laptop and power cord for your modem outside to the junction where it connects to the house. Retest and see if things improve. If they don't, call your cable company. If your own wiring looks to be at fault, reduce the number of splits that occur before the wiring reaches your modem and/or replace the wire itself, which may be faulty. The ultimate solution for cable modems is to create a split directly after the junction box and then run a clean new cable directly to your modem, using the other split for all of your TVs (which are less affected by noise).

For DSL modems, noisy inside wiring tends to be due to the other phone equipment on your line. This interference is supposed to be controlled by the filters placed between the wall jack and each device. Make sure that they are all in place. If you still have too much noise, the best solution is to install a "DSL/POTS splitter" immediately after the phone box, where the wiring comes into the house, and then run a dedicated "homerun" wire straight to the modem. This arrangement will completely isolate your modem from the regular phone wiring -- and the new wire should help, too.

If you don't want to do this job yourself, you can ask your cable or phone company to perform both tasks for a fee.

Finally, improper grounding can be a source of noise, especially on cable. Make sure that all of your TV equipment is plugged into properly grounded outlets, with polarized plugs oriented in the right direction and without any three-prong-to-two-prong adapters. If you have an electric outlet tester, use it to check for excess voltage on your cable wiring. An electrician can find and fix any grounding problems, which are safety concerns as well.

5. Optimize Software Settings
Now that your cable or DSL line is as clean as you can make it, you're ready to tweak your system and applications for maximum performance, too.

For optimizing network performance parameters in Windows XP or Vista, we like TotalIdea Software's Tweak-XP Pro Premium and TweakVI Premium. Both programs simplify optimization without requiring you to understand Registry editing or hidden Windows settings. Both packages include dozens of tweaks in addition to network and browser adjustments. The Pro version of Network Magic, an excellent network monitoring utility, includes optimization capabilities as well.

System-level optimization is less important in Vista than in XP, since Vista tunes your TCP stack dynamically. In fact, Vista users can probably get away with just optimizing specific applications, especially their browsers. To speed up Firefox page displays, try Firetune or Fasterfox. Both are free and one-click easy. Fasterfox adds a few more customization options for expert users. Both tweak low-level Firefox settings such as cache memory capacity, maximum simultaneous connections and "pipelining" (performing multiple data requests simultaneously).

6. Accelerate Your Downloads
Frequent downloaders can save huge amounts of time by using a download manager like our favorite, FlashGet. FlashGet creates multiple simultaneous download links and then puts the file together afterward. All you do is click or drag download links to the FlashGet window; the program does the rest. It integrates with Internet Explorer and works with Firefox using a companion utility called FlashGot.

Here are some of the best photos blogs and websites where you can view pictures related to current events captured by professional photo journalists. Not all news sites in this list provide photo feeds so make sure you bookmark them.

The Big Picture – This is a photo blog of Boston Globe that highlights current events and lesser-known news stories through some awesome high-resolution pictures that are sourced from AP, Reuters Pictures, Getty Images, NASA, and others private photographers.

Check some breathtaking pictures from Ramadan, India, Soldiers in Afghanistan or the Brazilian tribes that were discovered by the outside world only recently.

Time Photo Essays – Each photo essay includes a collection of 10-12 pictures that narrate (in text and sometimes audio) a story related to current news events. The pictures are also published in the TIME magazine.

Check these photo essays about floods in India, Olympic Games, Georgia conflict or learn how to make your own photo essay.

Getty Images – This is the best place if you are looking for live-coverage photos of news, sports and entertainment related events around the world.

You can legally embed Getty Images in your site without paying any license fee via PicApp.com.

BBC News – The BBC news website has a full section dedicated to news photographs including a popular "Day in pictures" segment that is a slideshow to top news stories of the day in pictures.

BBC In Pictures site also highlights photos that are submitted by citizen journalists. And if you work for a UK based publication, register at BBC Pictures and you’ll get access to BBC images for editorial purposes.

Reuters Slideshows – Wired news agency Reuters uses picture slide shows to narrate news stories and offbeat events.

Like Getty, Reuters too has separate photo galleries for showcasing pictures that are related to the top news events of the day, Entertainment, Sports and even Technology related events.

Yahoo! Photos – This is part of the Yahoo! News website and features an extensive collection of news pictures and slideshows that are sourced from news agencies like The Associated Press, Reuters, etc.

The best part about Yahoo! News photos is that they are available via Feeds but have a short shelf life just like Google News.

National Geographic – This is the place to go if you need a daily dose of photos from the world of science, nature or the animal kingdom.

US Defense – Look no further if you are interested in photographs from the United States Military. This is an official Pentagon site and often includes pictures from areas that are inaccessible to most people.

There’s a large collection of photo essays as well on the US Defense site. You may search for all images hosted on the US Government sites via this Google AJAX API powered image search tool.

Hindi Song | Websites That Are Popular Among Rich & Affluent Americans

When Forbes.com asked Bill Tancer of Hitwise to name some websites that the rich ‘upper class’ of America likes to visit, he shared some very interesting data.

Bill says that last year, during this period, this group of people was largely flocking to financial and brokerage related sites like Etrade, Charles Schwab and Fidelity.

However there has been a considerable shift in the online behavior of rich Americans due to the ongoing crisis at Wall Street and this $150,000+ income group now prefers surfing celebrity gossip sites more than finance websites.

He especially named PerezHilton.com as the one leading the pack saying that Perez Hilton might now be a good place for some brokerage firms to advertise.

Another interesting detail is that the largest segment of visitors that are flocking to sites like Slick Deals (coupon codes), Shopzilla (online comparison shopping) and Fatwallet.com (coupons and rebates) are the affluent American customers looking to get the best price.

Bill also noted that rich Americans are not visiting sites like MSN and The Drudge Report as much as they used to do last year.

Hindi Song | Now Upload Large Video Files to YouTube via Web Browser

YouTube has released a new web uploader that enables you to simultaneously upload up to 10 video clips in one go and each of these clips can be as large as 1 GB in size. Discussion here.

Though you could also upload large video files to YouTube earlier, it required you to download the desktop based uploader software but now you can send big videos to YouTube from the web browser itself without requiring any software.

Other than file size, YouTube had imposed another limit on the duration of the video clip. You were not supposed to upload any video that was longer than 10 minutes in length and I think that was in place to prevent people from upload full movies and TV shows onto YouTube. Not sure if that limit has been relaxed with this new update.

Hindi Song | Number of Websites with Google PageRank 10 May Have Reduced

Another Google PageRank update is underway and as usual some sites have seen their Google PageRank increase by a few points while that number has stayed constant or even dropped for some people.

Out of curiosity, I was trying to find web domains / web pages that have the perfect score - Google PageRank 10 – but surprisingly, this list is much smaller now and a large number of popular sites that were at PR10 few years ago are now off by 1 or 2 points.

For instance, apple.com, adobe.com, whitehouse.gov, www.w3.org, nasa.gov, intel.com, adobe reader, nsf.gov, mit.edu, real.com, apache.org, stanford.edu and energy.gov were all in the PageRank 10 category before but are now down by 1 point to PR 9.

Other popular sites that enjoy Google PageRank 9 are YouTube, Facebook, MySpace, Microsoft, Yahoo, Google Scholar, Creative Commons, SourceForge.net, Java.com, Lycos, The New York Times and Wikipedia.

TechCrunch, Google Blog, Digg, Twitter, WordPress.com and BusinessWeek have a Google PageRank 8.

Now coming to sites that have the longest green bar (meaning Google Page Rank 10) I could spot only just two domains - www.google.com and www.usa.gov which is the official web portal of US Government. It was not so lonely at the top few years ago.

You probably know about SizEasy – an online tool that helps you visualize the dimensions of any object (like mobile phones, laptops..) through comparison.

For instance, if you have an iPhone and like to compare it with say Nokia N96, you could enter the dimensions of both these objects in Sizeasy and it will draw a 3D view making it easy for you to visualize how the N96 stacks up against the iPhone at least in size.

Now Pective is a relatively new tool that serves the same purpose as SizEasy but takes a very different approach as here you desktop screen acts as a point of reference.

Assume, for a moment, that your computer monitor is like an horizontal table top. Pective will ask for your screen size and then draw the image (of the selected object) as if the real object has been placed on your virtual table top (i.e., the desktop screen).

Pective has just launched and therefore the number of objects available is limited but its still an interesting concept that you may want to check out.

I tried comparing the actual size of my credit card with the image suggested by Pective and it was surprising very accurate. If you spot an error, there’s an option to flag that image.

You may also use the tool to plan the layout of an upcoming site or for generating the sitemap of an existing website as in this example.

The tool has a very intuitive interface and the favorite feature is that you can share sitemaps online (each sitemap gets a unique URL) or you edit them with co-workers.

Now unlike your WordPress plugins that create sitemaps exclusively for search engines, the sitemap written inside Writemap is fit both for human and search engine consumption.

The downside is that this tool may not be fit for large websites as you have to create pages (nodes) manually.

Hindi Song | Importing Email Addresses from Google Apps into LinkedIn

Q: While you can directly add email addresses from Gmail, Yahoo or Windows Live Hotmail accounts into LinkedIn using the import contact feature, what are the options for people who using another webmail program like Gmail for Google Apps?

A: The answer is fairly simple. If your email is hosted on a web domain that’s not directly supported by LinkedIn (like @microsoft.com or @googlemail.com), you can still easily import email contacts into LinkedIn using the CSV option.

Just export all entries of your address book into the Outlook CSV format and upload the file here. Then select the contacts you wish to invite on LinkedIn and done.

PS: If your email address is Rediff, Indiatimes or Gmx, select the "other" option on the webmail import page and select the appropriate domain from the drop down – no need for you to do the import-export exercise.

Hindi Song | Google SMS Channels: Send SMS Text Messages to your Group for Free

Google India has just introduced a new product called Google SMS Channels that lets you subscribe to news alerts, blog updates and other kinds of information like horoscopes, jokes, stocks or even cricket scores via SMS text messages.

Google SMS Channels, which seems to have lot in common with SMS Gupshup, is free both for content publishers as well as mobile phone users who subscribe to text updates via SMS.

Families or friends can create private SMS groups on Google SMS channels and stay in touch via SMS without paying any fees to their mobile carrier.

Other than receiving blog RSS feeds via SMS, you may also use the Google SMS service to get news alerts and weather information on your phone.

Another interesting part – you don’t really need a mobile phone to send an SMS to your group as there’s an option in Google SMS channels that lets you can compose and send SMS messages via the web itself. It supports English, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada.

Google SMS channels currently works only with with phone numbers of India but they are “working towards making this service available to international numbers.”

Hindi Song | The Unnecessary Complex Design of Google Blogs Search

A somewhat disappointing fact about Google Blogs is that the site has been written purely in JavaScript so all you’ll see is a blank page if you try opening Google Blogs Search in a browser that doesn’t support JavaScript (like screen readers) or a browser that has JavaScript disabled - something that’s quite common on mobile phones.

No Google Blogs Search for non-JavaScript browsers

Maybe Google decided to go with a JavaScript-only site to prevent screen scraping or is it anything to do with Google Chrome that is known to render JavaScript faster than other browsers.

Another issue, as I mentioned before, is the amount of spam content in Google Blog Search. For instance, the following story is from a blog that is republishing content from TechCrunch.

Surprisingly, that spam blog made its way into a news cluster on Google Blog Search but the original story from TechCrunch can nowhere be found. This I think is an important issue that Matt didn’t touch up in his article comparing Google Blogs with Techmeme.

Personally, I don’t feel that Techmeme has anything to worry about yet.

Words often have multiple meanings. Consider the word MULLET which is both a fish and a hairstyle. A search for MULLET may give you a number of results about the hairstyle, but fewer about the fish.

To remove the results about hair, place a hyphen or minus sign just before the word you want to exclude, which means “show me the pages about mullet, but take away results relating to hair.”

Hindi Song | Feed My Inbox Delivers Blogs as Email Messages

SendMeRSS, RSS Forward, FeedBurner Mail and FeedBlitz are some popular blog-to-email services that let you read RSS feeds as email messages without requiring a news reader.

Now there’s a new player in the game called FeedMyInbox which works more or less the same as above mentioned services but offers some distinct advantages:

For instance, you may supply the address of a website that doesn’t have feeds (e.g. google.com) and Feed My Inbox will automatically suggest related feeds like the official Google blog, Google News, etc.

And incase a page is associated with multiple feeds (say, CNN or Yahoo! News), you’ll get a list of options to choose from – you can either select one or multiple feeds and they’ll come to you as an email digest with all that news that was published the previous day.

Nick Francis of Feed My Inbox says that "each time a user enters a site that cannot find a feed, our team gets an email. We go check it out for ourselves to try and attach a feed to that site if applicable so that anyone entering that site in the future gets a successful message."

Yahoo! today introduced Yahoo! Messenger 9 and a new service called Pingbox which is like a live chat box (in the form of a Flash Widget) that you may embed in any website or blog including your MySpace page.

Like the Google Talk badge, site visitors can send your private messages via the Pingbox chat box without requiring any IM client.

There are however some differences and the most noticeable one is that Yahoo! Pingbox embed inline in your website while Google Talk opens a pop-up window. The downside of Yahoo’s approach is that it extend the loading time of web pages because the widget will always download with the page.

Another difference is that you can customize the look-n-feel of your Yahoo! Pingbox through the dozen or so themes available in the Pingbox studio.

Thge Pingbox widget on the site will reflect the current status of your Yahoo! Messenger and will automatically become unavailable when you go offline or set your status as ‘invisible.’
